What Counts as the Deep Web?
The deep web includes ordinary pages and records that are online but not available in public search results. Your Gmail inbox, bank dashboard, private Dropbox document, work intranet and subscription research database all fit this category.
Some deep web pages are hidden behind authentication. Others are generated only after a search form, blocked from indexing, limited by paywall access or tied to a private account session. None of that makes the content sinister or anonymous.
A useful test is simple: if a public search engine cannot crawl and display the page as a public result, it may be deep web content. That says little about risk by itself.

The dark web is defined by intentional concealment and specialized access. Tor onion services are the best-known example: the site is reached through the Tor network and uses a .onion address instead of ordinary DNS.

Why People Confuse the Deep Web and Dark Web
Both categories are absent from ordinary Google results, so headlines often collapse them into one vague hidden internet. That shortcut makes private, routine systems sound more ominous than they are.
Old claims that most of the internet is hidden also contributed to the confusion. Many of those numbers refer to deep web material, not dark web services, and they are difficult to apply precisely to the modern web.
How Big Is the Deep Web Compared With the Dark Web?
Reliable measurement is difficult because the categories are not counted the same way. Search engines can count indexed pages, but private databases, account-specific pages and dynamic records do not form one tidy public inventory.
The dark web is even harder to measure because onion services can be short-lived, deliberately unlisted or reachable only through private sharing. Avoid treating claims such as 90 percent, 95 percent or 96 percent as precise current measurements.
