What Is the Tor Project, and How Is It Funded? Read the Reporting Period
The Tor Project is the nonprofit organization supporting Tor development and related work. It reports a mix of funding sources and publishes financial material. A useful funding claim specifies the recipient, reporting year, amount and category; historical percentages should not be presented as a permanent current breakdown.
Start with the documents, not a viral percentage
Tor Project publishes financial reports and describes support from sources including grants, foundations and individuals. Check the relevant document and period before quoting a share. A fiscal-year report is not necessarily a calendar-year figure or a live cash balance.
Also verify what the amount measures. Revenue recognized, cash received, a multi-year award and money spent can differ. They should not be silently exchanged when discussing dependency.
Keep a quoted figure attached to its period
If a number comes from a particular annual report, state that year and what was measured. A grant award, recognized revenue and current cash are not interchangeable. Readers should be able to trace the financial claim without guessing which account or period it refers to.

Do not make finance answer every security question
A grant can raise questions about dependence or incentives. It is not by itself evidence of a backdoor. Technical claims need code, design, reproducible findings or other relevant evidence.
Conversely, open-source software does not make organizational resources irrelevant. Maintenance and response capacity depend on people and funding. Both financial sustainability and technical scrutiny deserve attention without being collapsed into one yes-or-no trust label.
An accurate chart can become an inaccurate claim
Imagine a chart from one report is reposted years later without its date. The underlying figures may be genuine while the claim that they describe today is unsupported.
Keep the year, definitions and original document attached to the number.
